About the program
In 2023, Galambila received funding from NACCHO for a new National Suicide Prevention program known as Culture Care Connect. This program aims to support people who have attempted suicide or are thinking about suicide. We employed a Manager to start the program implementation process and we have expanded to include a Psychologist, Mental Health Nurse, Social Worker and two Aboriginal Wellbeing Workers. The team delivers services in a safe environment, with culturally appropriate care coordination and support, and linkages to different aspects of treatment.
Our team is an essential part of suicide prevention in our community. The program offers:
- Assertive and high frequency of rapid follow-up in the first week after a suicide attempt
- Face-to-face and telephone sessions
- Addressing social determinants of health that are contributing to suicide risk
- Involving support people such as family members and kin
- Involving clinicians that are culturally responsive
- Services that are integrated with primary health care services
- Assertive and rapid follow-up, case management and motivational support which remain in place for an appropriate length of time.
As part of this new program we designed and implemented a centralised referral pathway and custom developed a Client Management System to capture crucial data that we can use to identify service gaps and advocate for further funding.
Culture Care Connect (CCC) is a Federal Government funded initiative that aims to integrate suicide prevention and holistic aftercare with cultural sensitivity and community empowerment.
